We spend approximately a third of our lives asleep, but a lack of good quality sleep can negatively affect our health and lifestyles. In the UK, the Sleep Council reports that nearly 33% of adults experience poor sleep most nights.
It can limit our ability to make decisions and affect our alertness and attention span.
Affect our general wellbeing and our ability to work productively.
Increase our risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and also increase the risk of Alzheimer's and Dementia.
Lack of quality sleep has also been linked to a weakened immune system.
Sleep is one of the three key pillars of health, alongside a healthy diet and exercise.
So good quality sleep is essential to our health, but many people struggle to sleep for many different reasons. Some of these tips may help:
Have a regular sleep routine, such as going to bed and getting up at the same time and having a wind down period before going to bed.
Create the right sleep environment, switch off those devices, use blackout curtains and have your bedroom at a comfortable temperature.
Avoid heavy meals, caffeine and alcohol before bedtime.
Regular exercise can help you sleep better but avoid anything too energic too close to bedtime.
Try meditation and mindfulness.
